type

type program ...

Print a description of program, i.e., whether it is a shell built in, a function, or an external command. type is built-in to the Bourne and Korn shells. See Chapter 4 and also see which.

Example

Describe cd and ls:

$ type cd ls
cd is a shell builtin
ls is /usr/bin/ls
